ARCHIVED - 18 jellyfish stings, 2 sea urchins and an eye cleaning: these were the Lorca beach emergencies this July
The Municipal Emergency Service and Civil Protection attended 51 incidents as part of the Beach Rescue Plan on the coast of Lorca during the month of July
This July, the lifeguards and beach rescue services on the coast of Lorca attended a total of 51 incidents – 16 on the beach of Puntas de Calnegre and 35 in various other coves – a significant reduction on last year.
The Councillor for Emergencies of the City Council of Lorca, Isabel Casalduero, noted that “the largest number of interventions have been motivated, as usual, by stings from marine animals”.
There were a total of 25 emergencies related to animal stings on Lorca beaches last month – 18 from jellyfish, 2 from sea urchins and 5 from anemones.
There were also 12 wound care treatments, 5 treatments for insect stings, 1 treatment for fainting, another for burns and an eye cleaning.
Casalduero added that there was just one rescue last month: “In addition, on 4 July, a 76-year-old bather was rescued from the beach of Puntas de Calnegre with signs of tiredness and problems staying afloat.”
Isabel Casalduero thanked “the great work carried out by the municipal staff of Emergencies and Civil Protection to ensure the safety of all those who decide to visit and enjoy our beaches and of course also the responsibility of the bathers, as during this month of July the number of incidents compared to last year has been reduced considerably.”
Regarding sea conditions and the type of flags being flown, the Councillor for Emergencies has highlighted that “on the beaches of Lorca the green flag has mostly been flying but it is very important that, before getting into the water, you are aware of the colour of the flag flying to know the state of the sea and avoid problems that could occur due to currents.”
