ARCHIVED - 15 year old motocross rider rescued from Mazarrón mines
The rider had an accident in an area which was inaccessible for the ambulance
On Tuesday afternoon firemen from the regional fire service were called out to assist in the rescue of a 15 year old motorcycle rider who had crashed his motorcycle whilst riding in the old mine workings of the coto minero de San Antonio in Mazarrón.
This area is popular with motocross riders, but is dangerous, due to the presence of old mine workings, buildings and abandoned mining equipment.
The ground is unstable in some places and certainly following rain, the surface can be muddy, spongy and dangerous, and the piles of mining waste are prone to landslip.
In this instance, the young rider had tumbled down into a deep natural water run-off and had sustained various injuries.
Police and Protección Civíl initially attended the call-out from another young rider who alerted Emergency Services about the accident just after half four in the afternoon, but it was obvious that additional resources would be required to extract the rider due to his location in a steep gulley.
Firemen were called in to help with the extraction, and although initially the use of a helicopter was considered, the firecrew was able to successfully rescue the rider without its help, although the rescue was “difficult” according to the regional emergency services.
It was impossible to get an ambulance anywhere near the accident, so the injured rider had to be carried across difficult terrain before being taken to Santa Lucía hospital in Cartagena.
The area is popular with young riders in spite of the dangers it poses and local police have said that accidents are not infrequent.
