14 Murcia hotels await their new owners

There are more than double the number of licenced hotels up for grabs in the Region than this time last year

Running a hospitality establishment in Spain is the dream of many expats but years of financial hardship brought on by the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the resulting economic instability has made this challenging job harder than ever.

Nevertheless, operating a hotel offers incredible opportunities and the time has never been better to bag a bargain, since the number of establishments with a hotel licence up for grabs across the country has increased by 26.98% since the end of August last year. Today, there are 1,346 live ads on real estate website Idealista, 286 more units than in 2022.

In fact, the number of hotels in need of a new owner has tripled in the last two years in Spain.

At the end of August, every province in Spain had a hotel for sale, with the exception of the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The largest stock of available units was to be found in coastal areas in the heart of the country’s tourism hubs.

In the Region of Murcia, the number of licenced hotels for sale has grown by 55% in the last year, with 14 premises now awaiting their forever caretaker. But despite the increase, it’s far from being the province with the most surplus stock. The top spot goes to the Balearic Islands, with 111 unused hotels, followed by Málaga (106) and Girona (100).

Likewise, the high activity stands out in areas such as Alicante, with 91 properties for sale, and Barcelona, with 87. At the other extreme are Álava , with only two hotels on offer, as well as La Rioja, Orense and Vizcaya, with five for sale in each case.
