Tourists will be able to book guided tours to see the craftspeople at work restoring the iconic façade

12-month restoration project begins on Murcia Cathedral

The cathedral in Murcia city is undergoing repair and restoration work, and a giant tarp has already been erected on the front of the iconic building in the city centre while work is being carried out.

The tarp to cover the scaffolding and work happening behind is a bluish replica of the cathedral’s façade that lies behind it. This will soon be followed by a second tarp in November showing a more cartoonish representation of the cathedral and the importance it has within the local and regional cultural heritage.

Work to restore the building, which was built in the 15th century and takes in gothic, Baroque and neoclassical styles, is expected to last for the next year, until around September 2024. One vital piece of the work they are doing is to restore the ornamentation on the façade, which was the work of the 18th century architect Jaime Bort and is one of the most exquisite of the European Baroque period.

This is the first time in recent history that it has undergone a comprehensive restoration and overhaul and the Diocese of Cartagena has already pledged to invest 1.2 million euros in the project.

While the necessary restoration work is happening at the Murcia Cathedral, visitors will still be able to go inside and enjoy guided tours of the building, as well as take a special tour to see the artisans and expert restorers at work of the cornices and frontispieces of the façade.

From Wednesday October 18, those interested can visit lossecretosdelafachada.com to book a guided tour of the restoration work and discover ‘The Secrets of the Façade’, which start from Tuesday October 24.
