ARCHIVED - 12 loggerhead turtles returned to the sea in Murcia
The young turtles were rescued two years ago, and are now ready to go back to the wild
Murcia has commemorated World Sea Turtle Day with the release of 12 loggerhead turtles on the same beach in La Manga where they were found in 2020.
The turtles were all nursed and raised by the Oceanographic Foundation of Valencia, the most professional and experienced marine specialist in Spain, to increase their chances of survival and ensure that they are in optimal conditions for release back into the wild.
The 12 loggerhead turtles come from the July 2020 nesting season and, during the past year, another 30 turtles were released from this same nest. Another turtle is due to be released tomorrow on Calnegre beach.
All the turtles that are released carry a microchip under their skin so each one can be individually identified if it is recaptured at some point in its life, which will allow important information to be gathered about such aspects as migratory movements and global threats affecting the species – both factors of vital importance for the continued conservation of this beautiful species.
What to do if you find a turtle on the beach
Authorities have asked for full cooperation from people visiting Murcia’s beach users as we are currently in the loggerhead turtle breeding season, which takes place between June and September. They lay their eggs at night and the females are very sensitive to any sort of disturbance or interruption when they come out to lay their eggs.
The Turtle Territory campaign advises people to always keep a safe distance of at least 20 metres from turtles that are laying eggs and not to stand in front of their field of vision or dazzle them with bright lights, such as those from camera phones.
It’s also recommended to call the emergency services on 112 if you see a turtle laying eggs or find turtle tracks on the beach so that animal rescue services can pinpoint their location and protect their nest.
