ARCHIVED - Jumilla markets return to reduced capacity as case numbers climb
Jumilla has highest number of cases per head of population in the Murcia Region on Monday
On Friday Jumilla had become the municipality with the highest number of cases per capita of population in the Region of Murcia, and on Monday “extended its lead”, the rise fuelled by the fact that because the fiestas del vino had been cancelled to limit the spread of the virus, groups of young people gathered in private houses to celebrate their own fiestas, the result being a huge surge of cases in the municipality - ironically, the municipality is reportedly still holding 80 million litres of wine from last year which its bodegas have been unable to sell due to the lockdown in the bars and restaurants which normally buy it, so if the actions of these young people prolong the virus, it is their jobs which will be most at risk.
This is the same situation elsewhere, the surge in cases being linked to specific bars or family gatherings, the "I'm alright Jack" attitude of those less likely to suffer severe cases, literally killing the elderly and more vulnerable.
Jumilla has reported 118 cases in the last 7 days and 201 in the last fortnight, but as it only has a population of 25,600, this has pushed its rate of cases per 100,000 of population up to 460, nearly three times the regional average of 165.
The municipality has introduced a number of restrictions at a local level, including closing sporting installations and is now resuming the restrictions formerly implemented at many markets across the region during lockdown, reducing the size of the market, limiting it to fruit and veg stalls only and not allowing the public to touch the fruit on sale.
It does make shopping at the market a less pleasurable experience and causes frustratingly long queues; personal advice, get there early, buy as much as possible from each vendor to limit the number of queues you have to stand in and take a partner, so he/she can be parked in the longest queue with a list of purchases!
