ARCHIVED - Investigation into Mazarrón kennels discovered shocking neglect
Dogs were crammed into tiny cages and a decomposing corpse was unidentifiable
The Guardia Civíl has published images relating to an operation in Mazarrón following reports that dogs were being kept in appalling conditions by an unlicensed breeder.
The 'Bulmas' operation, begain in the middle of the month, after the Águilas SEPRONA division became aware of animal abuse in a dog kennel in the Mazarron municipality.
The Guardia Civíl obtained the necessary legal documentation and carried out an inspection of the farm where the canine kennel was located, in which it was found that the kennels where about twenty dogs of the Bulmastiff breed were housed, lacked running water and, although the animals were in apparently good sanitary condition, were being kept in deplorable hygienic conditions, due to an accumulation of abundant faeces and urine remains.
Dogs were locked in tiny cages, giving them no mobility or comfort and in a fenced space of approximately five square meters, which also lacked running water, a cemented floor and a roof, and without any lateral protection that would allow the enclosed animal to take refuge from the inclement weather was the lifeless body of a dog, whose race could not be determined due to its advanced state of decomposition.
The owner of the kennel, has been denounced as the alleged perpetrator of a crime related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals, for animal abuse. He has also been denounced for lacking basic documentation relating to the breeding business he ran.
The Investigating Court of Totana has now taken up the case.
The crime of animal abuse is included in the Penal Code, which defines it as the act of unjustifiably mistreating animals, by any means or procedure, causing them injuries that seriously undermine their health and is punishable by three months and one day to one year in prison and special disqualification of one year and one day to three years for the exercise of profession, trade or trade related to animals and for the keeping of animals.
#YoSiPuedoContarlo: Campaign against the mistreatment and abandonment of domestic animals
Images like these are published with the main objective of raising awareness amongst the general public to promote necessary measures in the protection, management and welfare of domestic animals, as well as to denounce those behaviours contrary to animal welfare of which people may aware, and the Civil Guard began a campaign in July 2017 entitled #YoSiPuedoContarlo, which translates roughly as being; Yes, I can say something about this.
The campaign aims to encourage the public to denounce acts of animal cruelty like this and to send out a strong message that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted. It also aims to ensure that members of the public know that their anonymity will be protected should they make denuncias against people committing acts of animal cruelty. The Civil Guard has detected an increase in citizen awareness since the campaign began, not only through formal complaints, but also amongst users of social networks, as shown by the fact that one of the topics that generates the most interaction in social media accounts is the request for citizen collaboration to clarify crimes of mistreatment of animals, such as this.
